Nails for breakfast, tacks for snacks

With the end of exams comes more free time than I know what to do with, so in eager anticipation  of my upcoming holidays I've began to fill my hours by playing around with nail art. It's early days and I'm just using what I've got around the house rather than spending non-existent money on overpriced nail art pens, but here's what I've got so far...

In light of the Jubilee, these felt appropriate. Although fairly simple, these require a lot of patience and a steady hand, neither of which I have. All you'll need is: dark blue nail polish (I used Navy by Barry M), red (Raspberry by Barry M, although a brighter red would've been better), white (French White in a simple manicure pack) and a base coat. Now here's where you need to get resourceful and have a hunt around your old make up bags. I found an old liquid eyeliner, gave the brush a rinse, and simply painted the flag on as though it were a paintbrush, starting with the four red lines, and then the white once it had dried. I didn't want it to be too overcrowded, hence only two nails being painted, and although it's a bit messy (particularly on my right hand), I LOVE the boldness of nail art. And I'm sure Lizzy would too.
Next up comes galaxy nails, which I've loved for a while but have always assumed they'd be near impossible to do alone, but they were actually suprisingly easy. Once again, you'll need a base coat, dark blue, white, plus a green (mine's by KiKo), a pink/purple (I tried Barry M's Strawberry Ice Cream but it didn't come out very well, so I tried the Berry Ice Cream and it showed a lot better), and finally a glitter top coat (Barry M, Silver Glitter). In addition, to create the effect, you'll need something to dab on the colour (most websites say a cut up make up sponge, but I didn't have one so just used a folded up cotton pad and it worked for me), and a toothpick/bobby pin to apply the 'stars'. Start with the base coat and navy, and allow to dry, then brush a thin layer of white polish onto the pad and dab away. Don't worry if they're a bit messy or don't watch. Then just repeat this with the green and purple, letting it dry (shouldn't take long as it's a thin layer) in between every coat. Then stretch out your bobby pin and dip it in the white, making sure it's not in a thick blog, and scatter little dots around the remaining blue to create the stars. To finish off, add a coat of silver glitter, and if you're feeling adventurous, dry sprinkling on a bit of dazzle dust to add a shimmer. Seal with a top coat, and there you have it.

Honest to blog?

With free time comes a greater variety of time wasters, my recent favourites being my every growing addiction to all things blog. It started off fairly innocently after trawling through interior design blogs to find inspiration for my imaginary house that has yet to exist. But then something changed. Suddenly I found myself with a 100 picture thick folder on my computer inconspiciously hidden under the alias 'things'. I nervously clicked on the folder to see what I had nonchalontaly saved, only to find an array of quaintly worn summer garden huts surrounded by bushes of hibiscus flowers, window seats hidden amongst achingly satisfying mounds of books whose covers themselves told a story, and duck egg blue Aga's housing an array of copper saucepans. But it didn't stop there. No, next came the treehouse searches, the blanket fort competitions, and the cabin porn, all displaying heart-filled, cluttered collections of materials; natural and personal...fairy lights, record players, handmade quilts. It didn't take long before I had an image of myself pottering around a kitchen wearing a 50s housewife style apron, making homemade lemonade served in jam jars to the smiling guests in my blossoming garden. So obviously I had to jump straight onto Nigella's website which is the ultimate A grade crack for ridiculous homely fantasies, and bookmarked about 50 recipes which I will never make for my flock of adoring guests. So this obsession went on for a while, hours spent clicking link after link of pretty little houses and food I can't afford, until I reached my ultimate new obsession...Alie & Georgia. Alie Ward and Georgia Hardstark are immaculately presented best friends from L.A. who gained fame through their inventive cocktail making skills in the viral video The McNuggetini and have since gone on to create a web series for Cooking Channel Tv, amongst various other ventures. Now Alie & Georgia are everything I love in people...namely that they're funny, ballsy and slightly batshit crazy...but best of all they do this whilst getting drunk and doing awesome stuff.

A Girl's Guide to Drinking Alone.

Drinking alone has a bad rep. Why that is, I really don't know. It's like being at an awesome party with all your favourite songs and no drunk sweaty guys trying to touch your bum, but for some reason the world doesn't look to kindly upon lone-drinkers, and admitting to be one is an open invitation for concerned eyes and patronising tones. Ok I'm not saying it's the best habit to get into, but sometimes you just want to crawl into your sweats and wail along to Neutral Milk Hotel without awkward stares and people trying to get you sectioned.

Now the first thing you want to do is get the perfect set up. If your cup of Long Island Ice tea is curling up on the sofa in front of the tv, make sure you've got a stack of movies and a blanket at the ready for pass-out time. For me, I'm happy anywhere as long as I've got itunes and a decent supply of tobacco. Next, pick out your gladrags. Some favour pjs, some favour dresses, some favour absolutely nothing at all. Drinking alone is the perfect excuse to wear what you normally wouldn't. That 80s style prom dress you were convinced would one day be back in fashion? Newsflash, no it won't, but who the fuck cares? This is your party girl, you rock the shit outta that dress. You wanna wear fake eyelashes and throw some shapes to Beyonce? Go for it.

Now to pick your poison. Be it an ice cold beer of vodka on the rocks...no one's going to judge you for it, that's the beauty of it all! Finally, we have the cherry in the cocktail; the music. Where's the fun in a one woman party without some tunes? Here are a few of my must-have drinking alone (or as I like to call it, bonding with gin) songs...

So ladies, have a blast, sing loudly, have a party by yourself, but remember...be awesome about it, no one likes a hot mess.

So here's to drinks in the dark...

Another Winter is here and once again out come the wools, wellies and hot chocolates, while we wave a mournful goodbye to any trace of warmth. Come on now, it's not all bad. There's the beloved Christmas menus for one, the end of X Factor is nigh, and have you seen that John Lewis advert?! Of course you have (oh cynics, please let us have this one?). So don't despair, there's lots to look forward to this Winter, even if Saturday nights spent in front of the telly with your slipper socks don't appeal to you...which they most definitely should.

TIGHTS

I'm not really sure where this obsession has come from but a simple pair of black opaques just won't cut it any more. Whether you like them ribbed, coloured or even dotty, the collections this Winter are full of variety.

ALL THINGS FLORENCE

Everytime we turn on the radio, open a magazine or switch the telly on these days, we either get lovely Florence Welch, or someone talking about lovely Florence Welch. With the suberb new album 'Ceremonials' out, this praise is entirely just, and I for one can't get enough of her haunting, still shockingly original voice.

Florence and the Machine 'Ceremonials', available now.

PARKS AND REC

Now that Towie's left us pale and plain-vagina'd, and we can no longer drool over the clothes and champagne in Made In Chelsea, I think we're all in need of a little pick me up. NBC's Parks and Recreation is the perfect remedy to the midseason television lull. Starring the exceptional Amy Poehler and now in its fourth season, Parks and Rec just gets better and better. Never has a show made me laugh until I couldn't physically stand it before now.

STARBUCKS

It's baaaaaack. And I'm so excited. Forgive me people cool enough to not get excited by the fact that a huge corperation briefly changes the colour of its cups, as I am sadly that uncool. I mean, Praline Mocha? Are you kidding me? Yum.

Video of the week/month/year/century etc.

Utterly in love with Best Coast's new video for 'Our Deal' directed by the always amazing Drew Barrymore, and starring some of the best young American actors including Chloe Moretz, Alia Shawkat, Donald Glover and Tyler Posey. Love the ambiguous time setting, Romeo and Juliet with an Outsiders twist, and the amazing costumes, as well as the great song!

See it on US MTV here
or here elsewhere.

Enjoy!

Dip Dye

We all know that familiar feeling...'I would definitely suit an electric blue bob...or maybe a red perm, hmm'. Hair boredom is what led Britney to become a balding maniac, and Christina to whatever the hell that frizzy octopus leg mess was on her head. So when I felt hair boredom creep up on me recently, I decided to go in a new direction (I'm naturally dirty blonde, have dyed my hair brown for a couple of years, and am now back to blonde). After being struck with the urge to hack it off into a choppy bob, which would look far more Joan Collins than Scarlett, I decided to try my hand at dip dying. For those that don't know, dip dye is the recent style of having two tone hair, usually starting darker and getting lighter, sometimes with colour towards the bottom.

Lauren Conrad's bleach blonde tips

So to get this look, you have to 'ombre' your hair. This is really easy to do, and as you're dying only the ends, it's not the end of the world if you damage your hair and you can just trim it. I used Jerome Russell B Blonde Hair Lightener Kit, which was really cheap and quick. Simply mix the bleach together, and apply the bleach to ends of your hair. I started by applying dye to the bottom 3 inches of my hair for about 10 minutes, and then went up another couple of inches, to get more of a gradient. I left this in for another 10 minutes, and then rinsed it out. It's super easy to do, and creates great results for a low price.

Hair all ombred-up, I decided to colour the ends, choosing pink and purple. After a bit of research, I decided to use Fudge's Paint Box range, using Purple Haze and Pink Moon.

I split my hair into 2 layers, and covered about 5 inches of the bottom layer in purple, and then applied pink top the bottom 3 inches of the top layer. I washed it off after 20 minutes and these were the results...

And when dry...

Not the best quality photos but I was really pleased with the results, and definitely recommend taking the plunge into dip dye!
